There are a few things to be aware of when restoring a vintage bike and sled.
1. Is it really worth it? Make sure the work that needs to be done is to your capability(very expensive if you pay a shop to do it).
2. How rare is this sled or bike that you may buy? don't pay too much for a fairly common sled. Some rare sleds can bring BIG money. For example: a 75 Ski-Doo T'NT R/V 245 is a rare and valuble sled, while an Arctic Cat Jag or Yamaha Enticer really isn't rare, but a fully restored one can bring a fair amount of money and pride on any trail. A Can-Am Sonic is a rare bike, a 86 RM125 is not, etc.
3. Make sure there is still parts availble. Most parts for Ski-Doo/Moto-Ski, Arctic Cat, Polaris, Suzuki(bikes), Kawasaki(bikes), Honda, and Yamaha are still available. you also may be able to get NOS( New Old Stock, NOT Nitrous Oxide Systems) parts. For that obselete or hard to find part, check local salvage yards, or you may be able to have a machine shop make one.
4. When you go to paint your sled or bike, get the right color by taking off a washer, or looking in another protected area to get the right paint code.
5. It also helps to talk to people who have restored or is restoring the same sled or bike as you( the internet helps alot).
6. when you take apart your sled or bike organize your nuts, bolts, parts, etc so you dont loose them.
7. Take pictures too, this helps to show off your completed bike or sled. Also to put parts in the right order.
8. Always do research on the sled or bike before you buy it. ex: check VIN#-be sure it isnt stolen, check stats, parts availability, were there any recalls, and how long did the brand last.
